LGS Teacher Devotes Unique Talent to Encourage Social Skills

LGS 4-6 Team Teacher Jenny McGraw is using her unique professional skills to create resources to help students with autism—and those without—increase their understanding of how to interact with peers and adults at school and in the community.

In addition to being a special education teacher and behavior intervention specialist, Ms. McGraw is a professional photographer accredited through Special Kids Photography of America. Using these skills, she has authored four books using customized photographs to help kids learn social skills in specific situations. The books include:

  • Going to School
  • Playing at the Playground
  • Going to the Doctor
  • Eating at a Restaurant

“In 2015 I saw a need for children’s books that taught social skills and expectations to children in a direct, realistic, and more relatable way,” explains Ms. McGraw.  “I decided to create a series of books that focuses on common areas where children need more explicit direction in social skills. The series is unique in that it features customized photographs for the topic, has a bulleted list of main ideas to simplify the language for children, has parent tips in the back of the book, and includes a page where parents or teachers can include their own photograph and individualized information for the child. It is my hope children of all abilities can benefit from this series and be better prepared for situations they are unfamiliar with!”
