Learning through Reading with a Touch of Magic

Reading not only helps students increase their vocabulary and their language skills but also helps students improve their concentration and memory, encourages empathy and creativity, and brings students together through a shared experience.

Mrs. Bachman is taking an advantage of the stay-at-home order in response to COVID-19, and free resources from J. K. Rowling and her Wizarding World partners, to guide her 4-6 Team students through a reading of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in J. K. Rowling’s popular series of novels.

To help engage and support students during distance learning, students can read the book while listening to an audio recording of the text; the audio recording is just one of many children’s classics available for free during the COVID-19 pandemic through Audible.

As students complete each chapter, they respond to reading comprehension questions prepared by Mrs. Bachman. Beyond these assignments, students are encouraged to explore Harry Potter at Home, an online hub of quizzes, puzzles, crafts and other activities to support students, carergivers and teachers confined at home during the COVID-19 outbreak. For example, students can read about the friendships in Harry Potter and the lessons they offer, or learn how to create a “scrapbook” of characters they encounter.
