Just like this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mrs. Bachman’s students created a parade of “Balloons over Broadway” virtually!
Mrs. Bachman has made “Balloons over Broadway” a favorite seasonal read among LGS students, staff, and others. The wonderfully illustrated book tells the story of puppeteer Tony Sarg, who imagined the giant helium balloons now iconic with the Macy’s parade. Watch a video recording of the book.
In previous years, Mrs. Bachman’s students decorated their own balloons for a parade inside LGS. (See images below; click to enlarge.) But in 2020, students created a virtual parade of balloons! As part of various activities related to “Balloons over Broadway,” students were asked to design their own giant parade balloons and share them via Google Meet.
For more information and inspiration on designing balloons, floats, and more, Macy’s offers videos and other resources for students. Children and adults can also learn more about this year’s parade lineup and the history of the parade.
The 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will air from 9am to noon on NBC. While the festivities have historically drawn massive crowds—about 3½ million spectators along the 2½-mile parade route in 2019—this year all activity will be limited to Herald Square and the only way to watch will be on television.
