It’s only the first week of school but already Mrs. VanBergen’s students are reviewing their letters and numbers with the help of some fun storybooks.
In Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom by Bill Martin, Jr., and John Archambault, the letters of the alphabet race each other up the coconut tree. Will there be enough room? Oh, no—Chicka Chicka Boom! Boom! After listening to Mrs. VanBergen read the story and taking turns identifying the letters on the pages, students created artwork depicting a coconut tree with letters.
Students also enjoyed a reading of Feast for 10 by Cathryn Falwell, a counting book describing a family shopping for a feast, preparing the food, and sitting down to eat. It not only is a great read-aloud book but also provided an opportunity for students to talk about who they share a meal with on special occasions and what food they might eat.
